Having any kind of skin issue comes with a mental complex, well at least for me it did.

I suffered from acne for the most part of my 20s. Now in my 30s, reflecting upon those years fills me with a lot of sadness. Here are the things I would tell my younger self or anyone suffering from acne or breakouts today.

  1. You feel self-conscious, but no one is really looking! I didn’t want to leave the house if my skin flared up, even with makeup I still felt conscious by the texture. Going on the Tube was the worst, the lighting was horrendous. Let me say it again for the people at the back NO ONE IS LOOKING. People are generally so self-consumed they don’t care about your skin.
  2. Similarly to point 1, it looks worse to you than to others. I went to Sephora once and asked one of their team to help me with my acne. He turned around to me and said, word for word “uhh honey you don’t have acne you have breakouts, big difference”. My skin was awful, if he thought it was just a breakout, man my warped perception of myself must have been bad. Back to the point, it’s usually worse in your eyes.
  3. Doctors are great (most of them, savage) however YOU know your skin better than they do. Dive into learning about your skin and your body. Make it your mission to learn what works for you. Embark on a journey run with it.
